"This age of modern communications,
of increasing access to information, able to show us news in seconds
after the event, has not made us more fair, committed or creative.
In this thing called the 'global village', we are much more selfish,
egocentric, brutal and patriarchal than most villagers ever were,
states sociologist Kamla Bhasin" (Sara Lovera).
"This world that produces so much knowledge, information, dissemination
of everything ... also signifies an expansion of intolerance, because
I begin to see ever more of what is different from me, and what differs
from me, in my own space, is a threat" (Regina Festa).
Perhaps we are not 100 percent sure that these statements are true,
but they do cause us concern. The more we reflect on the mass media,
the more we are motivated to keep on forming alternative networks
of communication, to create spaces where our real images are reflected.
The first part of Sara Lovera's article reminds us that the mass media
usually propagate junk products and violence. The second part will
deal with the story of the participation of women in Mexican media.
We agree with Sara in her desire to see this age of modern communications
accompanied by a better quality human development.
