Samuel Ruíz García was Emeritus Bishop for the diocese in San Cristobal de las Casas in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, characterized by the extreme poverty and high concentration of indigenous people. He has dedicated his life to improve the life conditions of the indigenous communities and to enhance their culture. He also was the mediator between the Zapatista National Liberation Army and the Mexican Federal Government.
