GARDEN LECTURE SERIES

This month we have a special guest from the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden, Kirti Mathura, who has agreed to lead the session on July 14th at 5:00p.m. (17:00). at the Botanical Garden. Please reserve a space by contacting Naomi at nzerriffi@yahoo.com or call 152 1829.

ADOPT A TREE PROGRAM

This program is a new initiative to raise funds to plant a barrier of large trees between the garden and the housing development in order to maintain the natural aesthetics of the garden. For $500 US you can adopt a tree to be planted as part of the visual barrier and a small plaque will be installed in your name. Call or e-mail us about this opportunity. It can be given as a gift for a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary or in memory of someone close to you.

PHOTO SHOW SUPPORTS EL CHARCO: "FLORA NATIVA" An exhibition of photography by Alfonso Alarcon at the Museo Historico de San Miguel de Allende (Cuna de Allende corner of the Jardín) during the month of July. Alfonso is donating 20% of the sales to El Charco del Ingenio.

In the Tienda

Interested in gardening in San Miguel? Fen Taylor’s book, About the Garden, is a well-written, informative book now available at the Tienda for 50pesos.

Another helpful guide to shrubs and trees in the area is called Arbustivas Nativas de Uso Multiple en Guanajuato [Multiple-Use Native Shrubs in Guananjuato] with color photos, easy to understand text in Spanish about the attributes of the trees, habitat, uses, propagation and more. It’s written by the Director of Parque Landeta, Cristina Gonzalez. Makes a great gift at 350pesos.

TUESDAY GUIDED TOURS

The guided tours of the garden includes the conservatory, wetland and canyon. These tours are 2 hours long and begin at 9 am every Tuesday. Your guide is Mario Mendoza, the knowledgeable Vice-Director of the garden. The tour is conducted in English but Mario can also explain in Spanish. The cost is 80 pesos for non-members and 50 pesos for members. It is a very informative and interesting tour and we encourage members and their visitors to take advantage of it and learn more about the garden and its programs. Plus you are able to visit the nursery which is not open to the public. Please reserve a space by calling MARIO at 0444151010338 or e-mail charcodelingenio@gmail.com. We suggest that if you do not drive that you take a taxi at a cost of 30-40 pesos as it is an uphill walk.

SUMMER SOLSTICE

This free ceremony was held on June 21 st. It is a celebration of life, a time to let go of the old cycle and regenerate our energy to start the new solar cycle.  During the ceremony stagnant energy in our bodies is gathered up using purification techniques, and cast into the fire, with tobacco and herb offerings and people are thoroughly cleansed before sunrise, drawing on energy from the elements (earth, fire, water, wind, space) the four cardinal points and the 10 directions.  The ceremony leader, Roland Torikian, began shortly after 5am and finished soon after sunrise.

TEMAZCAL Temazcal is an Indian ritual sweat lodge that benefits circulation, relaxes muscles, stimulates respiration and helps with weight loss. It is open to males and females.
